Prevent Pollution

What does nutrient pollution do to the river?
Too much phosphorus and nitrogen washing into the river feeds an excessive growth of algae and duckweed that gives the river its summertime green appearance. As the thick mat of aquatic plants dies, it gives off a sewage-like odor while consuming dissolved oxygen necessary for aquatic wildlife. Reducing the nutrient overload will help restore the Assabet River to a healthy waterway attractive for recreation and wildlife habitat.
• Switch to phosphate-free detergents
• Practice responsible lawncare and fertilizer use
• Dispose of pet waste properly
Conserve Water

The amount of water we use directly affects the amount of water in our environment. Conserving water helps maintain sustainable water supplies in the Assabet Watershed.
