Conservation Programs in Assabet Watershed Towns

Many of the Assabet watershed towns have instituted water conservation programs. Because this information is subject to change, we have provided links where available and contact information for individual communities.

Concord. Call 978/318-3285. Town of Concord, Division of Natural Resources, 141 Keyes Road, Concord, MA 01742.

Concord has a voluntary odd/even water use restriction on outdoor watering from May through October. People with even-numbered addresses are asked to water only on even dates, odd-numbered addresses are asked to water on odd dates. Everyone is asked to refrain from watering on Mondays. Check the Concord DPW webpage for more information. Or call 978-318-3250.

Acton. The Water Supply District of Acton's website is at www.actonh2o.com
Call them at 978/263-9107. Address: 6963 Mass. Ave., P.O. Box 953, Acton, MA 01720. Acton Water District Outdoor Water Use Restrictions: Effective May 1- October 1

  • Even numbered houses may use water outdoors: Tues, Thurs, Sat
  • Odd numbered houses may use water outdoors: Wed, Fri, Sun
  • No lawn watering from 7AM-7PM. This restriction applies to lawns only
  • No outdoor water use on Mondays (includes new lawns)
  • New lawns and new sod may be watered more frequently while being established, but not from 7AM-7PM

Maynard. Check with Maynard's Water Division (Phone: 897-3380; Fax: 897-1022) for updates on any watering restrictions.

Stow. (under development)

Hudson. For information see Hudson's website, or call the Selectman's office at 978/562-9963, 78 Main Street, Hudson, MA 01749.

Berlin. Does not have any public water supplies, so no water use restrictions are in place. You can call 978 383-2442 for more information.

Marlborough. The City of Marlborough does not currently have any water use restrictions in place. Marlborough uses a surface water supply. The City does not have an official website but you can call the Water Department at 508/624-6910 x7200 with any questions.

Northborough. Northborough currently purchases all of its town-supplied water from the MWRA. For more information, call the Water Department at 508/393-5030. Town Hall, 63 Main Street, Northborough 01532.

Westborough. In March 2002 Westborough adopted a drought management plan, with differing restrictions in place according to the remaining capacity in the town's water supply. The drought stages are as follows: advisory (85% capacity), watch (70%), warning (60%), and emergency (50%) conditions. For information on current restrictions, contact the Department of Public Works at 508/366-3070. 131 Oak Street, Westborough, MA 01581.

Shrewsbury. Restrictions, when implemented, are based on the street address number of the property and watering is allowed as follows:

  • Even numbered addresses may use water outdoors: Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday
  • Odd numbered addresses may use water outdoors: Wednesday, Friday and
    Sunday
  • No outdoor use of water on Monday
According to the Shrewsbury webpage: "Also on February 10th, 2003, the Board voted to prohibit new connections to the municipal water system for in-ground and garden irrigation systems. Outdoor water use, specifically lawn watering, is causing water demands in Town to exceed our state water withdrawal permit. With all the new home construction, underground sprinkler systems are now commonplace in most subdivisions. Of the two hundred largest residential users, the overwhelming majority are newer homes with underground systems. These high flow figures are causing undue strain on the water system and a burden to the majority of our customers who only use nominal additional water in the summertime. Again, we ask all our customers to use water conservation daily in their household usage and we thank our customers presently observing these practices."

For more information contact the Sewer & Water Department at 508-841-8506.
