River Cleanup
Another Successful Cleanup
Thanks to beautiful weather and strong community support, OAR's 22nd Annual Assabet River Cleanup was an outstanding success! High water from Tropical Storm Hannah limited in-river activity, but over 130 volunteers still managed to haul tires, bicycles, paint cans, TVs, toilets, and "even the kitchen sink!" from the banks of the Assabet, its tributaries, and the Concord River in Billerica.
Each September, in what has become a regional tradition, individuals and teams from local businesses, civic associations, scout troops, and high schools spend a Saturday morning cleaning up the Assabet throughout the watershed. The cleanup is followed by a pizza lunch, courtesy of local pizza parlors. One of our most popular programs, the Annual Cleanup is also deeply satisfying for the participants – a team of people at one site working for three hours can make a real, visible difference for the river and their community.
